Choice lives in the body

A man asks whether he is free. He asks with his jaw already clenched.

An actor is told: be angry. He does not look for a reason. He tightens the hands, sets the teeth, gathers the whole body the way anger gathers it.

The anger arrives, obedient, having been called by its own name in its own language.

The language is not words.

Tell a man to stop being sad. He cannot. Tell him to fill the lungs twice and empty them once, all the way down.

He is standing in a different room now and did not walk anywhere.

  mind to mind argued
  body to mind believed

He puts on music from a list he made three years ago. An old song plays. An old man arrives to hear it.

He did not invite him. He did not stop him either.

The room you enter chooses part of what you feel. You are the one who enters.

Ten days of sitting. No speech, no writing, no moving. Nothing happens.

Inside the stillness: the heart, the blood, the breath, the small lives on the skin, things appearing and leaving without permission.

Nothing holds still. Whoever sees this stops holding on.

The instruction never changes. Watch the sensation. Do not answer it.

Not the story of the sensation. Not the name of the sensation. The sensation.

There is the work of shaping the breath. There is the work of leaving it alone.

Both are good work. The confusion begins when a man does one and believes he is doing the other.

  four years a story
  four months a mood
  four days a weather
  four seconds a door

The practice does not remove the reaction. It shortens the distance to the door.

Sit still. Feel the arriving. Answer nothing. Then rise and do what is yours to do.

The brain will keep offering to manage the world. Let it offer.
